A Dronacharya awardee and coach with Tripura’s sports department, Nandi, as he is popularly called, has been by gymnast Dipa Karmakar’s side for the past two decades. He saw his student miss a medal by a whisker and finish fourth in the vault event at the 2016 Rio Olympics but believes that Dipa’s achievement in Rio paved the way for Indian gymnastics to gain popularity.

Nandi was an international-level gymnast in the 1980s and competed for India in more than 10 international events. Only the second gymnastics coach to be conferred the country’s most prestigious award in coaching, Nandi himself won the national championship five times and represented India at the 1982 Asian Games.
